Nutrition was not always a topic of so much interest as it is nowadays. Before the food industry began to manipulate the foods we eat, people ate whole foods from the ground or animals slaughtered freshly. Today, we find ourselves deficient in basic vitamins and minerals. So the new focus on nutrition is, in part, to understand why.
You can improve the nutritional profile of even packaged cake and cookie mixes. In addition to the regular instructions, many brands also list a “lower fat” version in which applesauce is used instead of oil. In a pinch you can also leave out the eggs. The point is that even when indulging in something like a cake, you can take steps to improve its nutritive profile.
In the grocery store, shop the outer areas and try to avoid the inner aisles. The outer walls of the grocery store is where the good stuff is. Fruits and veggies, fresh meat, fish, bread and dairy are all usually located on the outer aisles and areas. The inner aisles are usually full of preprocessed foods that can tempt you off course like cookies, chips, pastas, and others. Stay away from them to keep your shopping in line.
Eat bright colored foods. Veggies and fruits which are brightly colored are very healthy and low in calories. See to it that every meal that you eat contains some fruits and vegetables. if you can, eat the skins on fruits and veggies. Skins are full of antioxidants.
Make the transition from whole milk to skim milk, but do it slowly so that you can adjust to it. Start by switching to 2% milk then 1%, and finally settle on skim milk. The difference is that skim milk has 95 percent less fat and 50 percent less calories than whole milk.
You want to try and keep a routine with your kid’s meal times. Try to serve meals and snacks at roughly the same time every day. Let your child have juice or milk at meal times only, and drink water the rest of the time. If they drink juice and milk all day, they may not have an appetite later.
Many people love drinking iced tea, but try drinking green iced tea instead of “regular” iced tea. Green tea has polyphenols, which help protect against cancer, lower cholesterol and have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Black tea contains polyphenols as well, but far less than green tea. Green tea also has less caffeine than black tea.
Watch your salt intake. While we need a certain amount of salt to insure good health, too much salt has been proven to have a number of adverse health impacts. If nothing else, too much salt can result in our retaining water. Who feels like exercising when we are bloated with excess water?
Initially, the food industry was praised for using science to find a way to create inexpensive food and feed many more people than was possible before the innovations. But with the rise of deficiencies and disease, a new focus on nutrition has arisen, and people have begun to question how the science has undermined basic rules of nutrition.
